New York, You probably think this post is about you

And it is!

Totalbeauty.com recently reported that New York was the vainest city in the United States. Funny, cause I quickly assumed it would Los Angeles, but according to this report, New York spends the most money on maintaining their beauty and has a high number in business relating to personal care such as hair salons, nail salons, etc.

“Fact: New Yorkers spend nearly 60 million (yes, six. zero.) dollars on trying to make ourselves prettier each year. And there are more than three times the amount of salons et. al in NYC than any other city, and that includes Los Angeles.”

Meet: Chet Cannon

Chet Sitting

You’ve seen him on MTV’s The Real World. You’ve watched him on The Ruins. Chet Cannon is known for his exquisite style, his friendship with housemate Ryan, and his individualistic personality. Seriously, I’ve never met anyone like him before in my life. I was curious in getting to know Chet a little bit better just to see if he was anything like he was on show. In fact, he’s better!

Q: Alright Chet, tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do, what’s your sign? Etc

Chet: Well, first off, Chet is my nickname.  Chester is my real name…also the name of my Grandfather I might add.  Sadly, Chester rhymes with molester…the kids at school had a field day with that.  I’m still heartbroken. Right now, I am en route to LA.  Well, actually, I’m headed to Boston tomorrow for a week, then back to SLC for Thanksgiving, then Louisiana, then NYC, then PA, then Baltimore all before December 6th….I guess you could say travel a fair amount. I have lots on my plate right now.  I’ve been approached with ideas about new TV shows hosting gigs which influenced my trek from NYC to LA.  Personal endeavors would include YouTube (which I hope to more consistent with), writing a children’s book, inventing a bowless bow tie, chewable water.  In all seriousness, The Real World, for me, was like a small scale lottery….A lottery that can open many doors.  Now, what you do when the doors are opened is entirely up to you.  Mainly I’m just trying to hustle and stay focused.  There is a lot of easy money with hosting parties and what have you, but I am more than happy to forgo a few of those in my pursuit for elevated status in the television industry.  The end game for me is hosting a successful news show.

Q: Which do you prefer, being interviewed or doing the interviewing?

C: I’m impartial, to be honest.  I guess it depends on the people I’m interviewing, you know?  Sometimes you’ll get out there and throw the mic in someone’s face and instead of being unique, you receive some regurgitated, colorless rant.  I enjoy spontaneity…people who can shoot the proverbial shit.  When I happen upon those types, I enjoy conducting the interview.

Q: Chet, you happen to be one of my favorite Real Worlders ever. Just so you know, I don’t give out that title too often.  You made a brief appearance on The Ruins, would you ever do it again? What was that experience like for you?

C: Well, thank you, my lady!  You’re a peach.  Yes…brevity would be an accurate description of my time on The Ruins.  I loved it.  The format, in terms of filming is a bit more enjoyable than Real World.  There are so many people, so you can avoid the cameras if you feel the need.  Never say never.  I may do one again…depends on the location.  Phuket….obviously I wasn’t going to turn that down.  The Challenges aren’t a focus of mine at the moment, I will put it that way.

Q: Your friendship w/ Ryan and the song you guys made up in one of the early episodes. Inspiring. Are you guys still pretty close? How is he doing?

C: Ryan is doing very well.  He called me just days ago from IraqRyan and I have some projects in the works right now, which hopefully, will put both of us back on the tube…together.

Q: Your fashion sense is exquisite. Where do you prefer to shop and would you say you have more of a hipster or metro style?

C: Hipster or Metro….couldn’t tell you.  My friends from back home laugh at the way I dress.  They are the furthest thing from hipsters or metro.  I will leave that up to you guys to decide.  I really enjoy Ben Sherman and whenever I get a chance to visit SLC, I hit up the thrift stores.  SLC has great, cheap thrift stores.  You go to the thrift shop in NYC and the prices are comparable to those at Saks and Barneys…no joke.

Q: So are you still in Utah or have you relocated?

C: I stayed in NYC and only recently moved away, so I could pick up my car and make the trek to LA.  I hope to get back to NYC soon.

Q: What’s a typical day for Chet Cannon?

C: That’s a tough one.  They are so different.  Yesterday, I filmed some video for my YouTube channel, worked out, edited video, worked on a children’s book I’m writing, and then went to a party downtown for the Nitro Circus movie…dancing the night away.  It was brilliant.  After that, some mates and I went hot tubbing and I arrived home at 3 AM, where I then edited video again until 4 AM.  Tomorrow I hop on a flight to Boston.  I enjoy the inconsistency.

Q: If you could interview anyone, who would it be?

C: Dead or alive?  Let’s go with alive….hmm….maybe Pete Doherty.  He is my favorite rocker/fashion icon.

Q: My favorite episode was when you had the chance to meet and interview one of my friend’s bands while on the show, Danger Radio. Had you been listening to them prior to the show as well? And also, what kind of music are you listening to these days that you think my readers should be listening to?

C: Cool guys.  Love them.  The Danger Radio interview was offered to me and at that point I began listening to them (in preparation)….grew to enjoy it….and then we had the interview.  It was one of my favorites.  I just made this really awesome “love songs” mix.  I wish I could post a link to it.  My favorite band is The Sounds.  Easily.  At the moment, I’m stoked on Fun and Foxy Shazam (Check them out).  Amazing stage presence.

Q: There’s always talk that MTV’s editing portrays characters in a certain way for their audience to see them as. Do you feel as if you were portrayed correctly or incorrectly? Is Real World REALLY real?

C: You can’t deny anything that makes the air.  I believe they will heighten aspects of your personality, but each person has a lot more depth.  I’m not super bummed over my portrayal, but there are plenty of things I would have displaced with other moments from the 4 months in Brooklyn….had I been given the creative control.

Q: When I was younger, I used to want to be an MTV VJ, but first! I wanted to do Real World (like yourself) in hopes that it would lead me to becoming a VJ. This was before I knew TRL was going  to be canceled. Do you think MTV has contributed in helping you get to where you are today or did Chet Cannon conquer the world all on his own?

C: VJ’s don’t exist anymore…haha.  My stint on MTV has DEFINITELY given me more opportunities than I would have otherwise received.  Is it possible to make it without a reality show….ABSOLUTELY.  Reality TV can be scary.  You have to be very calculated about your decisions….which is very difficult considering the frequency with which you are filmed.

Q: I’ve seen some of your YouTube videos on your blog featuring your covers, is there a singing career in the works? Maybe you and Ryan can get together and start something!

C: Singing is just for fun…I’m not opposed to playing with Ryan when he returns.  I think we could form a pretty kick A duet.

Q: Jesse McCartney Pee Pee Hands story. Is it true?

C: Yes.  It is true.  Scott Herman and I walked into the bathroom and Jesse was on the phone, while peeing and didn’t wash his hands.  IT was disheartening.

Q: What are you up to and where can we see you next Chet?

C: You will see me again soon.  I hate to be the guy who says “it’s confidential,” but that’s how most of this stuff works.  Mums the word.

Before I Die

Every time I come across projects like this, I think to myself, “Why didn’t I think of this?!”

Before I Die I Want To…” reminds me of a non-anonymous Post Secret.

How it works: The creators of the project rome around to all these cities like LA, Chicago and New York, then venture off to India and hospice programs to snap a Polaroid of any random person and ask them to answer in their own handwriting the question, “What do you want to do before you die?”

It’s an interesting project really considering it was inspired partly due to the fact that polaroids were dying out.

If you would like to participate don’t worry if you think you’ll never run into the creators of the project, Nicole Kenney and ks rives, you can have someone take a picture of you! Then you can write in the white space your answer to the question and send it in.

Something that I find completely underrated is street art. The best part about them is that you never know when you’re going to find a piece. At least for me, I always feel like it comes out of nowhere.

Now you can go to a place where street art is collected in photographs. Unurth I hope one day I can go to one of these places and actually spot out a piece. I love that I believe that art defines a great part of my life. I think I owe my dad for that one.

Meet: Derek Mio

Tonight at 8 PM, the new season of Greek premieres on ABC Family. What are you doing? Cause you should be watching.

I had the opportunity to interview one of my favorite characters from the show, Kappa Tau brother, actor Derek Mio. I’m a huge fan of the show and actually just started watching this year, but got myself caught up through watching the first season on Hulu and hosting Greek viewing parties with Lucia at school. It was an intense battle for Lucia and I to search for a lounge and an open tv in my building just to catch the new episode.

Q: Derek Mio, where are you from and how did you get started in this business?

Derek Mio: I am from Huntington Beach, CA.  I attended USC Film School and during the summer of my freshman year I interned at a commercial agency and they decided to send me out because I figure a) their Asian clientele at the time was pretty limited and b) I had spikey bleached tips.  From then on I booked print jobs, then commercials, then TV guest star roles, then independent film roles, and here we are with you interviewing me because I’m on Greek.

Q: Have you wanted to be an actor your whole life or did these gigs just fall into your lap?

D: I can remember daydreaming about being an actor from a very early age as I sat in front of the TV watching Saved by the Bell, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Jaws on TBS for the 37th time, or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Last Starfighter on VHS; throw Big Trouble in Little China in there too!  Oh, and The Secret of My Success with Michael J. Fox! Anyways, I kind of had it in my head that I would eventually make it to being an actor and that probably influenced the cosmos to act in my favor.  For real, do you remember those posters in elementary classes that would say “Believe it and Achieve it!”?  Well, I guess I just applied that particular poster to my passion of acting.  I’ve been acting now for close to 9 years so I can’t really say that “these gigs just fall into my lap” but I have been fortunate enough to see a progression of one gig leading to the next.  We’ll see what happens…next!

Q: What is a typical day for Derek Mio?

D: I’ll get up around 9 or 10. Check my Gmail.  Check my Twitter.  Pour a bowl of cereal.  Maybe run to the gym and work out for a bit.  I like to edit videos so if I’m working on a project I will try to find a coffee shop and do that for a few hours.  Ummm…other days I might go play a round of golf with my buddy Zack Lively from Greek, who btw I saw you had a dream about the other day?!  I gotta tell him that one!

Q: You and the other Kappa Tau guys have a great relationship in front of the camera, are you guys bffls in real life as well?

D: I don’t think many people are “best friends for life” because that is a long time.  A lot of times you will lose track with friends over the years either because you switch jobs, or you move, or you just lose touch because you get married and have a family and now your whole life is devoted to your wife and kids.  I just think it’s a stretch to call any friend a bffl’er.  But to answer your question, our relationship onscreen is pretty accurate to that of ours in real life.  We don’t all hang out together a lot but when we do it’s like we’re back at the Kappa Tau house and we’re close as can be.  I’ve been pretty fortunate to work such cool professionals.

Q: I was reading a previous tweet of yours the other day when you said, “Just wrapped my last scene/episode of Greek. Bittersweet for sure. Love that crew! Look out for @Day_One on NBC!” Explain yourself please. Say it isn’t so, I don’t want Wade to leave Greek nor do I want to see Greek end.

D: Well don’t turn to my Twitter page for your source of official news!  I did land a role on a new NBC show called Day One which will air next year and that might conflict with Wade’s enrollment; hopefully not, but let’s just emotionally prepare for that now if it happens.

Q: The new season of Greek premieres Monday, what can we expect out of this season and out of Wade? A possible serious girlfriend?

D: You know Wade is up to the same tomfoolery and shenanigans but he’s older now…and a little wiser…by a semester.  You’ll just have to tune in to see what I mean.  Serious girlfriend?  Pssh!!  Wade doesn’t get down like that!  Ask Casey, Ashleigh, and Rebecca!

Q: How much alike are you and your character Wade?

D: Wade dresses much better than I do.  I’m a little more intelligent than Wade.

Q: What’s on rotation on your iPod right now?

D: I don’t really use my ipod as much as I should.  I go on Pandora.com a lot.  If you haven’t tried it you definitely should.  It plays music similar to a song or artist of your choosing.  But in my car’s cd changer I got Eminem’s Relapse, Doors-esque psychedelic rock band Black Angels, Hawaiian reggae band Katchafire, and L.A. based hip hop band DDL Roundhouse--definitely worth checking out!

Q: What’s new with Derek Mio and where will we be seeing you next?

D: What’s new with me?  I just went deep sea fishing with my brother, cousins, Aunt, and Uncle and caught some yellowfin tuna.  You will be seeing me on Greek, Monday nights at 9/8c on ABC Family and next year on Day One on NBC.

Q: Anything else you want to tell my readers?

D: If you watch Greek, thank you for supporting the show!  If you don’t watch Greek…

Thank you so much Derek for the great interview :) Can’t wait to see you on this new season of Greek and your new show next year. Take care! Watch Greek every Monday at 8 PM on ABC Family

Meet: Jazmin Whitley

In a recent post, I introduced Jazmin Whitley’s new television show on MTV called “House of Jazmin.” After hearing about this young and talented designer, I decided it would be perfect to get in touch with her to find out more about her show and her line. Be sure to tune into “House of Jazmin” tonight at 10:30 PM! This is also my first interview, but hopefully the first of many!! Thanks!

Q: Jazmin, you’re 20 twenty years old. You have shown your collection at LA Fashion Week. That is a major accomplishment! How did this happen? Tell us about how your career started.

Jazmin: I created my very first collection in high school at the age of 17 and launched it in March of 2006 for LA Fashion Week!

Q: Everyone has a pivotal moment in which they realize “This is what I want to do for the rest of my life.” When did this occur for you?

J: I have always LOVED fashion, but I would say around nine years old I knew I wanted to be in fashion.

Q: What does it take to be a fashion designer? I’m assuming passion, drive and dedication correct? For musicians, patience and trial and error are big. Is this the same for an aspiring fashion designer as well? Did it take a little bit of time for you or were you able to just get into the industry pretty quickly?

J: It takes HARD WORK, passion, drive, dedication. You have to be strong and know not everyone is going to be encouraging and positive. I launched my label in March of ‘06 so since then I have been networking and slowly working my way into the industry.

Q: Are you ever intimidated by the fashion industry, the demands and working with others who are much older than you?

J: Sometimes I feel like I have to prove myself and show them that I can keep up with everything. It also seems like since I’m young they really pick apart my work and it can be really stressful.

Q: Are you in school at all? Do you ever feel like you are missing out on the college experience or are you simply content because you are already so successful at the age of twenty?

J: I’m really happy to be where I am right now. I feel really blessed. I can’t picture myself doing anything else.

Q:  What is a typical day for Jazmin Whitley?

J: It depends on what stage I’m at in my collection. I could be sketching out ideas,or fabric shopping. I could be sewing my samples. When I’m finished with my collection, I cast models and get ready for fashion week or have meetings with buyers. If I’m not doing any of that, I could be having a lookbook photo shoot or dressing celebs for the red carpet. I guess there is no typical day in the life of Jazmin Whitley.

Q: You have your own television show, House of Jazmin, that premiered on MTV last Tuesday. Can you tell us more about it?

J: You can watch it every Tuesday night at 10:30pm on MTV www.houseofjazmin.mtv.com You get to see everything that I do as a designer from casting models, working on my collection, fashion weeek! and my personal life as well! I think it’s a really fun, upbeat and positive show :)

Q: What is it like working with your family? I think it’s so cute that your brother is your photographer also!

J: Yes! My brother is an amazing photographer and he is always there to help me. He is still my little brother so he can be annoying and it can be crazy at times. At the end of the day, we love each other so it’s cool.

Q: Who is someone that you would love to collaborate with in the future?

J: I would love to dress Anne Hathaway!

Q: What is on rotation on your iPod currently?

J: Cobra Starship, Britney Spears and Incubus

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years down the line? Is fashion designing forever or would you like to branch out into another fashion related career?

J: I see myself in growing my label, adding shoes and bags. Being sold at department stores. Opening my own boutique. So yes, I see myself working on my label forever!

Q: By the way, are there any stores in Seattle selling your clothing?

J: Not yet! Soon I hope =] for now you can shop online www.shoplicari.com

Thank you so much Jazmin – wishing you the best of luck on your career!!

Things I know vs Things I want to know

Where does Kanye West find the time to update his blog every day?

I am going to apply for internships in LA for next summer, but if I’m going to be honest and with everyone else, I would much prefer to stay here in Seattle for the internship.

I want to know if I will ever have perfect health.

Blogging is my therapeutic vice.

I find it somewhat comforting that even my best friends and most of my family don’t read my blog because they simply just don’t know about it or think it’s about me and know all they need to know about me which is neither negative nor positive. I don’t keep this a secret it’s definitely out there.  And for a little bit, I feel like I get to live this secret life.

Andrew Shahamiri – I dedicate this to you.

And I don’t do this very often.

In The News…

- Amy Poehler will return to Saturday Night Live to reprise her role as the news anchor alongside Seth Meyers on Saturday Night Live Weekend Update on Thursday September 17th. How does this work? I guess NBC is creating a new fall comedy lineup for Thursday and will serve as an introduction to Poehler’s season premiere of “Parks and Recreation” at 8:30

- Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami is a new reality television series that will make its debut on E! on Sunday August 16th

- Some company used Paris Hilton’s face on a herpes ad. Lulz.

- Katherine Jackson, Michael Jackson’s mother, will have full custody of his three kids.

- Nickelodeon’s television series iCarly will come to an end. Soon.

- Musician Estelle and designer Rachel Roy will collaborate together for a jewelry line slated to debut Spring 2010.

- Actress Bryce Dallas Howard (daughter of Ron Howard) will replace Rachelle Lefevre as evil vampire Victoria in the Twilight saga movies beginning with the third film, “Eclipse.”

- California govenor Arnold Schwarzenegger has made the decision to cut all of the funding for domestic violence programs in the year of 2009-2010. That’s $16.3 million. wtf? why would you do that?

- Actress Diane Keaton will have her own 30-minute television series on HBO in which she plays a feminist icon running a porn magazine for women.

- Jude Law will be adding a fourth child to his bunch of three already from ex-wife Sadie Frost. This time, the woman is unknown, but it has been said that they were in a relationship last year but are no longer involved.

A sperm bank in Los Angeles (no surprise there!) is letting YOU pick the sperm donor yourself based on what celebrity they look like. There are many celebrities within this search including those above, Adam Brody, James Franco, Ryan Gosling and many others. Because who doesn’t want their child to be a hot piece of ass when they grow up right? The only problem is that you can’t totally confirm that the donor looks like who they say they look like. Let’s just hope that honesty wins this time.

- Aly & AJ have now changed their name to 78violet. Apparently the numbers are their lucky numbers respectively and violet is their stage persona?

- Tegan and Sara will be releasing their new album “Sainthood” at the end of October.

- Apparently, word on the street…crocs are DEAD. Thank god.

- Ivanka Trump has become engaged to New York Observer’s publisher, Jared Kushner.
