Yow Yow!

Out on the Town: 12/19

Schoolyard Heroes and Kane Hodder will lay to rest in their graves tonight after they perform for their last show EVER. Both bands have had quite the following over the years and will be missed amongst the hardcore crowd. I once witnessed a Schoolyard Heroes performance at Bumbershoot in 2007 and by the end of the set my face was melted off.

If you’re looking for a riot or a place to get down, this is your calling tonight. They may just make you feel like you have never been to a concert worthy of even being called a concert until you have seen them. You can bet that they will go all out.

Show takes place at El Corazon tonight. 8 PM. $15. All ages. Other acts include: Sirens Sister, These Arms Are Snakes, and Blood Cells.

Jingle Bell Bash

Every year, KISS 106.1 hosts Jingle Bell Bash and usually you can expect the typical mainstream artists that they always play on the radio. It’s become a little bit predictable when you see Fall Out Boy, The Pussycat Dolls, The Jonas Brothers and Natasha Bedingfield on a lineup

This year, KISS 106.1 has become… what’s the word…scene? It’s not quite mainstream completely, but they’ve chosen a lineup of bands that to the rest of the world might all sound similar. I know they’re not only because I’ve been listening to these bands for quite some time, but what is their  fan base going to think when they see no hip hop? They could’ve been expecting Lady Gaga, Jay Sean, or that adorable 15-year old Justin Beiber.

So who did KISS 106.1 choose for this year?

  • The All American Rejects
  • Cobra Starship
  • All Time Low (more…)

Bumbershoot Review: Katy Perry

Katy Perry

credit

I swear, I went into this this performance with an open mind, but I’ll be honest, when “I Kissed A Girl,” I came out, I just couldn’t understand the mainstream hype. When I walked into Memorial Stadium, I gave Katy a clean slate. I was prepared to be blown away by her voice, which I have always thought was decent, but instead I was disappointed. No, I wasn’t disappointed, I just stopped caring and was you know that term… “over it?”

Katy Perry is a character. She wears the red lipstick, she has the unique outfits, she’s like MIA or Lady Gaga (almost.) She’s a little risque because she kisses girls! oooh! The performance, however, did not live up to her character. It was almost as if everything I’ve ever heard about her was played up so much that people have forgotten if she could perform or not.

She did make her apologies to the crowd by saying she didn’t get a lot of sleep the night before because she had wanted to be on time for Bumbershoot. Okay, I’ll give her that one. Another time she said, “I need a Starbucks!” In my head, I was thinking “Good God, I need a Starbucks to get me through watching this performance!”

Her performance slot was at 2:30 meaning she was still a big act for the mainstage, but not quite as big as Sheryl Crow for the headliner on the mainstage later that evening. Maybe the girl thought she needed to say more shocking things to boost up her wow factor or something, but it was very unnecessary indeed by saying “I know you’re not here for me, you’re here for someone else.” While, yes, that is true, we didn’t think you actually had to SAY it.

Her audience was mainly teenage girls (as expected) with just a dash of male presence, obviously the boyfriends of those girls. Everyone else seemed to not be paying that much attention to her. In one last attempt, after performing her last song, Perry decided to rage on stage by raising up her giant red lipstick before throwing it to stage with all her might.

I asked my friend, “What’d you think of her performance?”

“It seemed kind of half-assed,” he responded.

Bumbershoot Review: Dyno Jamz

I just transferred all of my notes from my Blackberry to a word document. Most tedious thing ever. Originally, I wanted to do one big post of all the bands I was reviewing, but you know what, I think all of the bands deserve their own recognition.

I’ve been waiting to catch a Dyno Jamz performance for a very long time. The guys were playing pretty early around 12:30, so luckily I arrived at the festival with ten minutes to spare. Dyno Jamz continued to acquire more and more attention this year as they competed in the EMP Sound Off! competition triumphing through every round until finally taking first place. One part of the prize (of quite a few parts) landed them a gig at Seattle’s largest and most anticipated music festival Bumbershoot this year.

The best way for me to describe their sound is like a jazz ensemble complimented by rap lyrics. The two mesh together so well that I couldn’t imagine them separately. Another thing I love about this band is how humbled I feel they are about the whole experience. These guys are students over at UW! You can tell from seeing them on that stage that they are very grateful to be there and expressed that by sharing their love for the crowd.

My favorite song by them is “Universal Love,” but when MC Zac Millan showed us his softer side with the song “Heat It Up,” my heart swooned a little bit as a I felt like I was falling into some weird dream state! I know…it was weird. Songs do that to me sometimes.

Watching their performance was the perfect start to my day! Whether or not a possible career may come out of this, who knows, I think I would like to see them take it to that level. The band has great potential, I mean they’re making teenagers LOVE jazz, which is definitely a refreshing sight to see. The guys of Dyno Jamz don’t look like rockstars [yet], but they are proving to be very well deserved winners.

TheOvercast.Net

I was just catching up with my friend Pauline tonight since we’re both OA’s and are moving back to the city this Wednesday when we both discovered our common interest in both music and writing. It started with an, “Oh you saw Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground at Bumbershoot yesterday?” and lead to “They played at one of my shows awhile ago we should go see them together and finished off with a bang! A “I run a blog ish site.”

And if I lost you already the convo went – Pauline-me-Pauline. (in a jist)

So everyone go check out her site! It’s awesome because she’s got interviews with bands and reviews of albums and she runs it all on her own.

We decided that we’re gonna collaborate, someday somehow.

Katie’s Bumbershoot Recap

Today, I was able to mix business with pleasure. The business of having to watch five acts to write a review on for Redefine Magazine (of course, they were five acts I had wanted to see) and the pleasure of spending the day watching some of these acts with my OA’s. I took paragraph long notes on all the performances with my blackberry…crazy work.

This was my third year attending Bumbershoot and as always, I had a great time. I felt that the tone was set a little differently this year. I don’t know if the rain is to blame or what, but everything seemed much more tame. No one was really running around and there were less people moving. People preferred to be more reserve maybe.

I don’t want to give out info about the performances or post pictures just yet because I will be using them for the review and when I finish that I’ll put it up on here also. I didn’t take any streeet style photos today because no one was extraordinary. Nothing made me want to chase anyone down :/ sorry!

A very important lesson was reiterated back to me today while I was standing in line waiting to see Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground’s performance. Actually it was a lesson that I made up a couple years back. It was a goal or maybe a rule that I believed would better a person. I believe that if you can have a conversation with any random person at any moment then you are set. Obviously it’s still something I’m trying to develop. Maybe you’re not set for life, but you are comfortable enough to speak with any stranger and can make up a conversation on the spot. You’ll find that most people can’t do this. It’s definitely something I’m still working on myself.  As I stood in line, a guy who looked just like Eric was behind me. Behind him was an Asian man who had just moved here from Philidelphia and had volunteered at Bumbershoot that day. What began as a conversation about when Kay Kay was performing turned into future aspirations for James (the young man,) European movies, types of art that the Asian man loved, relationship, families and an exchange of emails. It was probably the greatest thing I have seen all day. I’m not an analyzer on people. The three of us stood in line alone with no accompanyment. I quipped in every now and then, and even at the beginning of this I could tell James wanted to involve me more, but the Asian man had known no one since moving here and he had taken a liking to James. The conversation went on for nearly 45 minutes and when we were finally able to get into the EMP venue, the two men stood together and enjoyed the show.

As much as I regret not being able to exchange more words and being a part of this bond, I’ve come to the realiziation that it wasn’t my bond to have, it was theirs. I witnessed the entire thing and it was a sight to see what relationship had come out of this – two men – that you would have never thought would have much in common from looking at them, but in fact you probably couldn’t get them to stop talking to each other.

I’ll leave you with… my favorite picture from last year!

Death Cab For Cutie Bumbershoot 2008

The one thing I look forward to every summer! I can’t wait! So I’ve already made up a tentative schedule…

Dyno Jamz – 12:30 – 1:30

Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head – 2:30 – 3:30
All American Rejects 3:15 – 4:15

I will be with my lovely OA friends all day meanwhile, taking notes for a future Redefine article and taking pictures for Bumbershoot Street Style!

“Ketchup, because we don’t have any cool condiment named restaurants in Seattle!”

My two week trip to California could not have gone any better! It was a much needed vaca away from school, but now I’m back in beautiful Seattle and cannot wait to be back in the city and seeing all of my friends again :)

Song of the Day

Phoenix – 1901

Hudson told me about this song months ago. I heard it on the trailer of “New York, I Love You,” and Gregg Gillis included it in his new mix last weekend!

I Conquered Days

Along with this blog project this year, I also began my 43 things adventure. It’s basically a to-do-list of what you want to achieve in life.

On this trip I was able to check off two more things from my list.

  • Go to a huge music festival that isn’t Bumbershoot or that is out of state
  • Fly to visit one of my college friends or a friend away at college

Well, I am satisfied.

New Header – Song of the Day

Happy September!

(almost)

My header, once again shot by Mark Hunter The Cobra Snake, is of one of my favorite idols, Cory Kennedy. There are many reasons why I chose this as my header for September, one being that I brushed up against either HER or her look-a-like last night at the Street Scene Music Festival in San Diego.

September is a month for fresh starts, reinvention. It is always the month that I return to school after spending 3 months of summer anticipating slash scheming about the person I would like to be during the school year.

September is the start of fall, my favorite Seattle music festival Bumbershoot and

dun dun dun…

FASHION WEEK!

today’s song of the day is

Rye Rye ft M.I.A. – Bang

because we’re gonna kick off the school year w/ a bang. bang. BANG!

Street Scene Music Festival Recap

When San Diego parties, they do it up big. This had to be … better than any Capitol Hill Block Party or Bumbershoot I have ever attended. So here are some things I’ve discovered/learned tonight

  • Gregg Gillis of Girl Talk denied me tonight by not giving me a wristband to go on stage with him, and I cried. It’s not that embarassing, I’m just very passionate about some things k?
  • Bands that people should start listening to now: Holy Fuck and Matt and Kim
  • Tonight, some girl denied me from taking her street style photo. That’s a first
  • Southern California boys are very good looking
  • I love San Diego
  • I love this music festival
  • If the rest of the world is dancing to Girl Talk, you should be dancing to Girl Talk too
  • If you get on stage for Girl Talk don’t act like it’s your own personal stage for karaoke.
  • I dance too hard, and then I get danced on
  • A boy in pigtails jumped on both of my feet

BRB

I’m HERE ALL DAY TODAY! GIRL TALK HERE I COME!
