Yow Yow!

Will you buy Olsenboye?

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are two of my favorite style icons. They have practically been my fashion influences since Full House. Aside from watching them grow up in their television shows and their series of weirdly romantic comedies like Passport to Paris, I have witnessed their growth in the debut of their two lines The Row and Elizabeth and James.

Both are beautiful collections, but way outside of my range. When I heard that Mary-Kate and Ashley were releasing their new line Olsenboye at JC Penny, I got a little bit excited. In fact, it was the same kind of excitement I felt when I heard Charlotte Ronson was collaborating with JC Penny as well. The news release of Olsenboye was huge in New York. There was a video teaser of young girls wearing the collection, a cupcake truck advertising the brand and selling merchandise all over the city and BALLOONS! Olsenboye was looking promising. Finally, women everywhere will be able to dress like the classy Olsen twins.

The Lookbook:

1) This isn’t how Mary-Kate and Ashley dress typically. I understand that it is a juniors line, but many of these trends happen to be outdated. The Gossip Girl wannabe blazers are okay, but why the badge? Why not keep it simple like Ashley Olsen’s usual look? Is it necessary for the plaid skirt to be high-waisted and fuller at the bottom? Don’t even get me started on that graphic tee above with slime colored writing.

2) I just went onto the JC Penny website, out of curiousity, to see if there would be more pieces featured. None of the items featured in the look book even appear on the website. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing at this point. In addition to this, all of the prices for the items on the website have been slashed in half!

Looks like the line didn’t do so well after all…

Columbia University and the coed dorms

(It was hard to find a relevant picture, but yes, that is a pad plastered onto her forehead.)

Beginning fall 2010, Columbia University in New York will install a new “gender neutral” housing policy available for anyone that is NOT a freshmen. YES! This does mean that guys and girls will be able to select each other as roommates.

My thoughts: If this is an equality issue, then I suppose I understand the university’s new policy. After all, couples of the same gender, regardless of mentioning that they are dating, are allowed to live together so why can’t heterosexual couples? Most of the people choosing to dorm with their significant other will be over 19 so this is allowed, right? At least you wouldn’t have to worry about your other roommate being sexiled from now on. I see the positives in this.

The only problem I see with this is what would happen if a couple were to break up. Awkward. I mean let’s face it, not everyone can be a Cory and Topanga. (And years later after remembering one of my favorite shows, I am now wondering WHY they named her Topanga.) I don’t think people are too young to make the decision of living with their significant other, but I hope that they are sure of what they are doing because it can be troublesome. If I had this option, I think I would still choose to live with my girlfriends maybe. This is my last year to dorm anyways and I can’t really imagine living with a boy.

What do you guys think?

In the News…

- Cancelled show, The Beautiful Life, will return to finish off their season in the summer.

- Levi Johnston – the baby daddy of Sarah’s Palin’s daughter – will not be showing his full frontal nudity shot in Playgirl…THANK GOD.

- Forever 21 will be debuting their new magazine this Friday. Think H&M style magazines.

- Television writer and producer Amy Sherman-Palladino is trying to make Gilmore Girls into a final movie to wrap up the story lines.

- Sony Pictures Television is trying to bring back Charlie’s Angels onto the television screen once again.

- Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be designing a jewelry collection called the Protector for Asprey, which will all be based on a snake. Not surprised there.

- A Costco store in East Harlem, New York will now be selling discount designer bags. They are completely real, but the discount is probably not the discount you wish it would be.

Burberry’s mini satchel costs $1,019.99. A medium shopper tote by Tod’s is $549.99. The Ferragamo “Marissa” handbag goes for $629.99. And the Chanel bag costs $1,999.

Now, you can buy your purses and food all in the same place.

- The Ting Tings have signed with Jay-Z’s record label Roc Nation.

And it is!

Totalbeauty.com recently reported that New York was the vainest city in the United States. Funny, cause I quickly assumed it would Los Angeles, but according to this report, New York spends the most money on maintaining their beauty and has a high number in business relating to personal care such as hair salons, nail salons, etc.

“Fact: New Yorkers spend nearly 60 million (yes, six. zero.) dollars on trying to make ourselves prettier each year. And there are more than three times the amount of salons et. al in NYC than any other city, and that includes Los Angeles.”

In hopes of receiving more attention and seeing an increasing jump in visitors at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, they are now allowing their  guests to touch the art and paintings?

“Though it contains more than two million pieces and represents a profound legacy of artistic achievement, most people remain completely indifferent to our museum,” Met director Thomas P. Campbell said. “So we decided to try something a little different and give visitors a chance to experience our timeless works of art up close and personal.”

Personally, I think even  if I had the chance to do this, I wouldn’t. Maybe it’s because I have an artist for a father, but I would never DARE touch any of his stuff. Even pictures, I was taught only to touch lightly at corners and I insisted that people do the same. I appreciate art, I really do. In some cases I understand wanting to be close to something in another way and while it’s important to feel texture, I could do w/o this option.

Regardless, this seems to work for them. Attendance was increased as expected and there are waiting lines up to about 45 minutes. Looks like they’re doing something right.

Before I Die

Every time I come across projects like this, I think to myself, “Why didn’t I think of this?!”

Before I Die I Want To…” reminds me of a non-anonymous Post Secret.

How it works: The creators of the project rome around to all these cities like LA, Chicago and New York, then venture off to India and hospice programs to snap a Polaroid of any random person and ask them to answer in their own handwriting the question, “What do you want to do before you die?”

It’s an interesting project really considering it was inspired partly due to the fact that polaroids were dying out.

If you would like to participate don’t worry if you think you’ll never run into the creators of the project, Nicole Kenney and ks rives, you can have someone take a picture of you! Then you can write in the white space your answer to the question and send it in.

Fall/Winter Movies to come

When I’m at school I never get the chance to watch movies. The theater is within walking distance, but not only am I a poor poor college student, I mostly just don’t have the time or would rather do something else with my time. However, I went to a few movies this summer and saw many many new trailers for movies set to be released this season

Is this supposed to be in competition with the movie New York, I Love You?

All-star cast, a movie about love, different stories with one big story?

Hmm…

Can you determine what people hate and love just by looking at their picture? It’s actually harder than it looks. Play the game to see how well you do. You’ll find out the right answer when the pictures turn into videos to reveal themselves!

My score was 30

Song of the Day

Phoenix – 1901

Hudson told me about this song months ago. I heard it on the trailer of “New York, I Love You,” and Gregg Gillis included it in his new mix last weekend!

The Fashion Week Countdown – 15 days

The September Issue Premiere

I am so excited to see this movie! Finally, someone is capturing the time and process, not to mention, the work alone, it takes to put out Vogue’s largest and most anticipated issue every year. The September Issue. “dun dun dun”

All the designers and models came out to play!

Designer Vera Wang in her own design- 4

I love that designers always remain consistent in what they wear to events, but I guess you’d have to be if you’re around your own collection 24/7. Makes sense.

Model Hillary Rhoda in Rachel Roy

Dress gets a 3, shoes get a 1. poor choice.
